Garden Clean Up

clip branches
pull up weeds
out of breath
sweat beads

stubborn stem
full force tug
eek - SURPRISE
giant slug

Today I was inspired to incorporated the word "surprise" into my poem by Mary Lee Hahn at

  1. So funny! And so true. Those garden surprises are the best. For us, yesterday it was road surprises. The frogs are out with the rain! Happy spring and many good surprises to you. Happy Poetry Friday too! xo, a.

  4. Ew! Those slugs do surprise--especially if you grab one while tugging.

  5. Terrific, and you remind me that if I could discover a few of those slugs, they make good items for students to sketch. I do my clean-up in the fall, so instead will have to dig around a little, see what's down there! Thanks, Bridget.

    1. I'm so glad my poem will inspire art, Linda! Drawing a slug sounds like the only good use for them. Happy slug hunting! =)

  6. So many things hide under the leaves and rocks. Such an adventure gardening.

    1. Yes, gardening can be quite the adventure - and not just because of the slugs. =)

  7. Yikes! A surprise, indeed!

(Truth be told, though, I would probably follow my "Yikes!" with a closer look and a move to a better spot. I am, after all, the one who rescues earthworms on the sidewalk after a hard rain!)

    1. Yes, Mary Lee, we have a rescue/relocation plan in place with the critters we find. This past week we rescued/relocated a toad from our bathroom! =)

    1. Thank you, Liz! Surprises are nice in a poem - not so much with a squishy critter in your hand. =)

  10. Your first stanza makes me feel as though I should get out there and do some work! But your second stanza makes me feel okay about staying in :-)
